I have a 2005 Maxima SE and the A/C is blowing hot air. I have recharged it twice and it’s not holding a charge. I took it to the shop and they found a leak in the low side hose, and I had them replace it. They recharged it again and blew slightly cool air (not cold air like it used to) for a few days before it went back to blowing hot air, and the guy at the shop told me that the compressor was on its way out. He also told me that if you replace the compressor you need to replace the expansion valves and dryer as well.

I spoke to another mechanic who said as long as the compressor isn’t locked up then there isn’t a need to replace the other two parts.

Whose advice should I take, and is replacing the compressor something that I could do myself?

I have a 98 Camry with a bad compressor. The mechanic at my local garage told my wife he needs to change the compressor, expansion valve and the dryer (0.00). I was told by a different mechanic that it is not necessary to change the expansion valve which is about 4 hours labor. Just get a kit from Walmart, blow out the lines and replace the compressor and dryer myself. Is this something that a lay person can do. I do all my own house repairs and am very good with tools. Also what is the procedure to blow out the lines to get any metal or rubber shavings out of the system.

My air used to blow ice cold both idling and driving until the compressor went last week. I had a new compressor, dryer and orifice tube put on by a mechanic, and he put in R134A. It blows great while moving, but when I am at a red light this air conditioner makes me sweat. I have 10 cans of R12 in the shed. Should I convert this truck back to R12, or use one of those alternatives like Duracool or envirosafe?

Question about 1996 Lincoln air compressor?

Just recently I was told by my mechanic that I needed to replace the entire rear air system and that it was going to cost me in the neighborhood of 00. I opted to replace all of that with a pair of heavy duty shocks for around 0. My Mechanic wasn’t too happy. Anyway… He left the compressor plugged in and now it’s starting to make a loud grinding like noise – almost like it has dirt in the bearings. (?)
My question is: does the air compressor still need to be connected since I no longer have an air suspension system? The model is a 1996 Lincoln Continental Cartier

Thanks

I took my 1990 Lincoln Towncar to be smog tested yesterday. It passed everything except Air Inj System. The guy said that it is missing!! What the hell is that and how do I fix it? I believe my boyfriend said something about the A/C being taken out. One mechanic said something about a pulley and a belt needing to be replaced, I asked if he would do it and he said he knows how but it would be too much work and he’d rather not do it!! Anyone know what’s going on and how to help?? I know NOTHING about cars!! Also, he mentioned something about a compressor, i don’t really remember much of his suggestions, everything he said was in "auto" terms and was like a foreign language to me!! Please someone tell me what is wrong, if I can fix it myself(have someone do it) or if it’s something only a mechanic can do.

It was under the "Tamper" section. I love in NV. It isn’t the catalytic converter, that is on there. It’s

Dried overnight. Replaced the distributor and all the spark plugs and wires. What else might it be? (my mechanics can’t get me in until the middle of next week. Yesterday I dried it with the air compressor too.
the spark was yellowish, not blue white. It’s back at the dealership. will choose the winner when the final word comes back . it is a 94 Geo prism AKA Toyota Corolla (with a crappy sound system), It now has over 264000 miles on it, and when I bought it, the trany was only supposed to last 100000!
I get it back Monday (bet the mechanic is waiting for the engine to dry by itself).
It was the coil

Air Conditioner in my car has problems?? :(?

I took my car (2001 Ford Escape 6 cylinder) to a local shop and they told me that my lines from my compressor (manifold assembly) are leaking and the center seal on my compressor. Will Quest / 4 oz. Stop Leak work for this problem?? If not, what do you suggest. The shop quoted me 7 for lines, freon and labor or 0 for compressor, lines, drier, freon, and labor. The mechanic said that I don’t necessarily need the compressor or drier but he recommends I replace them as well!!!! Please help!! My husband has even consider replacing the lines and the seal and then filling it with "recharge". Please tell me the best thing to do that is price efficient.

Air conditioner question…. accumulator?

Is the Accumulator in a car’s air conditioning system just another name for the Dryer?

I couldn’t find out information on the web about a car’s AC system. My mechanic said I need to replace the A/C compressor and the Accumulator. Im trying to find cheaper parts online to give to him.

What I mean by partially is, it works when I am sitting still, but as soon as I take off, it stops working. I worked at a trucking company last year and the mechanic was adding freon to the trucks and asked if I wanted him to check mine. He did and decided that it needed about half a can of 134, when he was doing that, the amount he was putting in was not affecting the reading on his gauge that he had hooked up to it, so he put almost 2 cans in it. When I took it home that day, the compressor started acting funny, so the next day, he drained some of it out. Now, it hasn’t been working right since. I’ve had another mechanic look at it (with barely any air conditioning experience) and he stated that it was like nothing he’d ever seen, the high side would go really high and the low side would go really low. He mentioned something about draining all of the freon and possibly a little oil and filling it back or it could be the dryer and he would need a vacuum pump for that. Please Help
